Introduction

CM Regent, A subsidiary of Church Mutual Insurance Company, is seeking a Senior Underwriter for our Education Center of Excellence.  This individual will work with our key broker partners across the country on Education business.  Within the scope of established binding authority and company underwriting guidelines, this candidate will evaluate complex Education submissions, identify potential exposures, recommend appropriate coverage solutions, and offer strategic risk management advice. They will ensure accurate pricing of insurance products specifically tailored to Education risks.

What you’ll be doing:

This role involves managing a portfolio of highly complex accounts, providing expert guidance on underwriting practices, product offerings, pricing strategies, and corporate directives. The candidate will contribute to achieving organizational objectives by developing and executing strategies to enhance the quality and profitability of the underwriting book.

 

As a recognized underwriting authority, the candidate will provide leadership and serve as a subject matter expert, offering insights on unique or challenging cases. They will also play a key role in knowledge sharing through mentoring and training programs, fostering the development of underwriting talent across the organization.

On any given day, you’ll:

Production Underwriting & Business Retention

  • Underwrite and retain business within established binding authority and regulatory filings to support corporate growth and profitability goals.
  • Cultivate broker relationships to drive profitable growth, deploying sales tactics to build targeted pipelines and executing on sales strategies to promote differentiation in the marketplace.

Risk Analysis & Decision-Making

  • Evaluate complex risks using diverse data sources. Make and document sound underwriting decisions, identify loss exposures, recommend coverage alternatives, develop risk management strategies, and price accounts to achieve targeted profitability. Decline or non-renew accounts that do not meet underwriting standards.

Reinsurance Administration

  • Apply a thorough understanding of reinsurance principles, calculations, and administrative processes in accordance with company guidelines.

Authority Escalation & Communication

  • Collaborate with supervisors on matters exceeding binding authority or involving territory-specific considerations.

Sales Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the sales team and external broker partners. Serve as a mentor and resource by providing guidance on coverages, forms, underwriting philosophies, and guidelines. Proactively share insights and offer creative solutions for coverage, pricing, and risk management.

Industry & Product Knowledge

  • Stay informed on underwriting practices, company operations, and industry trends. Maintain expertise in CM Group products, policy forms, and niche markets. Pursue ongoing professional development through internal and external learning opportunities, broker events and conference attendance.

Market Awareness & Self-Development

  • Maintain advanced knowledge of insurance products, market dynamics, pricing strategies, and emerging issues. Engage in continuous self-improvement to enhance underwriting expertise and personal effectiveness.

Customer-Focused Leadership

  • Support customer satisfaction by meeting service expectations, assisting across territories as needed, and fostering positive interactions with internal and external stakeholders.

Departmental Expertise & Support

  • Serve as a subject matter expert within the Underwriting Department. Assist peers with complex accounts, contribute to special projects, and support knowledge sharing across the organization.

Team Leadership & Engagement

  • Act as a departmental leader and role model. Embrace change, proactively resolve issues, promote collaboration, and take ownership of decisions and outcomes. Foster a culture of trust, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Here’s what we expect

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or sufficient years of experience underwriting Education business is required. In lieu of a degree, completion of the Associate in Underwriting (AU) designation or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) strongly preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant underwriting experience, preferably within a property and casualty insurance company, with a minimum of 5 years focusing on complex commercial accounts. Strong preference for experience working with Education risks.

Technical Expertise

  • Deep understanding of underwriting principles, insurance coverages, and reinsurance practices. Proven ability to manage highly complex insurance transactions and serve as a subject matter expert in commercial underwriting.

Analytical & Decision-Making Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to assess risk exposures, identify concerns, and develop effective solutions. Skilled in making sound decisions beyond standard parameters while operating within binding authority.

Communication & Negotiation

  • Exceptional ability to clearly articulate underwriting decisions and negotiate appropriate outcomes. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate professionally, respectfully, and effectively across all levels of the organization.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Proven leadership capabilities, including mentoring, team collaboration, and supporting corporate objectives. Ability to lead by example through integrity, initiative, and accountability.

Adaptability & Initiative

  • Self-directed with a proactive approach to learning and professional growth. Open to change and committed to continuous improvement in efficiency and effectiveness.

 

 

Organizational & Technical Skills

  • Strong organizational abilities with attention to detail. Proficient in using CM Group systems and adaptable to evolving technologies and processes.

Travel

  • Ability to travel as required.

Exact compensation will vary based on consideration of a variety of factors including education, skills, experience, and location.

Minimum Compensation

USD $96,600.00/Yr.

Maximum Compensation

USD $144,900.00/Yr.
